A wave of mixed reactions has trailed a trending video on social media, showing a lecturer issuing stern threats to fail a more than half of his students over poor class attendance.
The video, which has since gone viral, captures the visibly furious lecturer lamenting over the low turnout of students in the ND1B Mass Communication class, as he addressed the few who showed up for a scheduled lecture.
In the 1-minute video, the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) lecturer, simply identified as Fred, is seen expressing displeasure over what he termed “wastage of effort,” vowing to ensure that a great majority of the students fails as a consequence.
“They feel that Fredo is a kind lecturer, so they shouldn’t come. I promise you, I will fail more than half of you. We have 300 students in this class,” the lecturer declared in a heated tone.
He further threatened to take the matter to the Head of Department, noting that the actual number of students present in the class was not even up to 80. According to him, such poor attendance was unacceptable, especially for a National Diploma 1 class.
“I will report first to the HOD on Monday that the people that come to B class in ND1 are not even up to 100. They are not even up to 80. If we can count the number of students that are here, I promise you I’m going to set a test by 6 o’clock,” he added.
The lecturer, who appeared to be speaking around 5:36 p.m. as captured in the video, emphasized that nothing would save the absentees from the consequences, and even instructed the students to send the video of his threat to the HOD, encouraging its circulation among members of the department and media platforms.
“I can’t waste my chance when I come here and be teaching an empty class. ND1 for that matter. ND1B. Please, post it,” he concluded emphatically.
The video has since triggered a flurry of reactions from social media users, with opinions divided over the lecturer’s approach and utterances.
While some have condemned his threats as unprofessional and intimidating, others argue that his frustration is understandable given the widespread issue of absenteeism and nonchalance among students.
