The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for unidentified gunmen who gruesomely murdered two persons in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area of the State on Thursday, May 15.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday while confirming the said bloody attack that reportedly occured at about 10:45 AM.
According to him, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, declared the manhunt when he visited the scene of the crime at Egbebelu Village, Nanka, at about 11:30am on Thursday, alongside some senior officers of the Command.
Continuing, the Police spokesman said preliminary information revealed that one of the victims was a legal practitioner who had just secured bail for a defendant in an ongoing murder case at High Court II, Ekwulobia. He said, after the court sitting, the lawyer and his team were reportedly returning to their base when they were intercepted and attacked by armed men riding on a motorcycle.
He said the assailants, believed to have been monitoring the movement of the victims, double-crossed them and opened fire on them, killing two on the spot, adding that one person, however, managed to escape the attack and has is currently receiving treatment in the hospital, while the remains of the dead victims have been deposited in a morgue.
According to SP Ikenga, the Command has launched immediate investigation and manhunt operations against the unidentified assailants, guided by credible information obtained from the eyewitnesses and the survivor, whom he said has been debriefed by the Police and is assisting with valuable information to aid the investigation.
While commiserating with the relatives and friends of the victims, the Command added that a red Toyota Camry believed to belong to one of the deceased was recovered at the scene of the attack, while the remains of the victims have been identified and released to their respective families.
