In yet another bold stride in its relentless war against criminality in Anambra State, the Police Command has apprehended a member of a notorious armed robbery and motorcycle-snatching syndicate terrorizing parts of Nnewi, leading to the recovery of a stolen motorcycle and a dangerous weapon.
The arrest was carried out on Wednesday, May 29, 2025, by vigilant operatives attached to the Otolo-Nnewi Police Station, who have been on the trail of the gang following a series of coordinated attacks and complaints from residents, particularly in the Nnewichi area of Nnewi North Local Government Area.
Confirming this in a statement to newsmen on Friday, the Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect, identified as one Nnaji Chukwuka, a 20-year-old male, was apprehended following credible intelligence and strategic surveillance that exposed the modus operandi of the gang. He said upon the arrest of the suspect, one sharp machete and a Honda Cub 120 motorcycle were recovered in his possession.
According to the PPRO, it was gathered that the recovered motorcycle was snatched from its rightful owner during one of the gang’s recent operations. He said the stolen bike has been identified and returned to the lawful owner, thanks to the prompt investigative steps taken by the Police.
SP Ikenga further disclosed that the suspect has made confessional statements and is cooperating with investigators to unmask and apprehend other members of the criminal network, some of whom are believed to be operating across different parts of Nnewi and its environs.
“The suspect has made useful statements that are aiding the ongoing investigation. Our operatives are making commendable progress, and we remain confident that more arrests will follow soon,” he stated.
Reports have it that residents of the area who have long endured the terror of this gang, particularly commercial motorcyclists and traders, have expressed relief and commended the Police for their proactive response in dismantling the syndicate.
The Command has also reassured the public that no stone will be left unturned in its effort to track down the remaining members of the gang and bring them to justice.
