As part of ongoing efforts to rid Anambra State of criminal elements and ensure public safety, police operatives attached to Otolo-Nnewi Division have arrested two suspects alleged to be terrorizing the Nnewi area.
The arrest, which occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2025—coinciding with Workers’ Day celebrations— was made around 1:45pm following credible intelligence that led officers to a suspected criminal hideout in the area.
Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, identified the arrested suspects as 21-year-old Ani Obinna and 43-year-old Okwudili Ezike, both male. He noted that the suspects were apprehended after a hot chase by the police.
According to SP Ikenga, a foreign-made pistol, three live rounds of ammunition, and a lady’s motorcycle suspected to have been stolen were recovered from the suspects. During interrogation, both individuals reportedly confessed to being members of a secret cult and a kidnapping gang operating in the area.
They also provided useful information to the police, which is currently aiding efforts to dismantle their network and arrest other members of the gang.
In response to the development, the Police Command has intensified surveillance and patrols in Nnewi and its environs, reassuring residents of its commitment to creating a safe and secure environment where lawful businesses and work can thrive.
SP Ikenga added that the Command is more committed than ever to fostering a secure environment for meaningful work and businesses to thrive in the state, while also assuring that the situation is being closely monitored, with further updates to be communicated as investigations continue.
