The recently launched grassroots security outfit in Anambra State, Agụnechemba, popularly known as Operation Udo Ga-Achị, has officially unveiled its new uniform, signifying a shift from their usual all-black dress.
The uniform comprises a black trouser, red beret and a long-sleeve top with camouflage-like designs that have touches of black, red and ash colours. The top also comprises a drawing of a head of a lion and the inscription ‘AGỤNECHEMBA ANAMBRA STATE’.
More notably, the uniform prominently displays unique identification numbers on the chest. This, it was gathered, aims to ensure that each operative is easily identifiable, thereby enhancing transparency and trust between the security personnel and the members of the public.
However, the uniformity appears not to be extended to footwear, as some of the officers seen in the picture put on different colours of shoes, including one that looks like the NYSC jungle boot.
The unveiling of the outfit on Thursday has also sparked off a chain of mixed reactions on the social media.
While some citizens have lauded the move as a step in the right direction, aimed at curbing excesses and ensuring that operatives are easily identifiable, some others have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the new uniforms in addressing issues of misconduct and abuse of power by security operatives. They argue that without proper training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms, the uniforms alone may not be sufficient to instill discipline and professionalism within the ranks.
Recall that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who has been at the forefront of multi-sectoral reform in Anambra State, had, on Saturday, January 18, launched Operation Udo Ga-Achị in a strategic move to address the then-rising insecurity in the state.
Comprising personnel from different security agencies, the outfit, since then, has also proved to be equal to the task, judging by their several successful and victorious operations which resulted in a significant and immediate drop in the alarming rate of crime and insecurity bedeviling the state as at then.
With time, however, some unpleasant reports and video evidences started emerging on the infamous activities of some officers of the outfit.
This resulted in the inauguration of the State Supervisory Committee by Governor Soludo, to oversee the activities and operations of Agụnechemba. The committee, comprising key stakeholders from various sectors, is tasked with ensuring that the security outfit functions in a structured and law-abiding manner, with a clear mandate to monitor and coordinate all Agụnechemba units across the state.
This recent launch of Agụnechemba uniform with unique number tags has also been lauded as part of the ongoing efforts by the government to professionalize the operations of Agụnechemba, enhance accountability within the outfit, as well as boost the morale of the operatives and their dedication to a more secure and peaceful Anambra — a step towards achieving a livable and prosperous homeland, as envisioned by the Governor.
