A dramatic scene reportedly unfolded in Bauchi State over the weekend as Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau allegedly slapped the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during a heated confrontation.
According to sources close to the incident, the altercation occurred during a wedding and turbaning Of Former Governor MA Abubukar in the state capital and was sparked by remarks made by Minister Tuggar, which were perceived as disrespectful towards the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed.
Tuggar, who has previously been accused of spreading misinformation and making disparaging remarks about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration in Bauchi, has drawn criticism from political stakeholders and constituents alike. Many residents of Bauchi have expressed disappointment in the Ministerโs conduct, questioning his contributions to the state and labeling his recent comments as โgrandstandingโ and โdivisive.โ
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, told reporters that tensions quickly escalated between the two political figures, culminating in Deputy Governor Jatau reportedly slapping the Minister in the presence of dignitaries and aides.
โIt was a shocking moment. The Deputy Governor was visibly furious. If not for the timely intervention of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was present, the situation could have gotten completely out of hand,โ the source said.
As of press time, neither the Bauchi State Government nor the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to reach the spokespersons for both officials were unsuccessful.
Political analysts warn that the incident could further strain the already tense relationship between the PDP-led state government and federal officials. Observers are also urging for calm and decorum among political leaders, especially amid the rising political temperature in the country.
