The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the gunfire incident that occurred in Ukwulu community on Saturday evening stemmed from a domestic conflict between siblings.
This was disclosed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday, in which he further confirmed that the incident has been successfully contained by security operatives.
According to the statement, police operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu swiftly responded to the scene of the shooting and averted further escalation of the situation.
The operatives rescued a victim who sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation and immediately rushed him to the hospital where he is currently responding to treatment.
Two suspects were arrested at the scene, while one AK-47 rifle, a pistol, and six rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them.
Preliminary investigation, SP Ikenga said, revealed that the gunfire incident was as a result of a long-standing disagreement between the victim and one of the armed suspects, who are said to be biological brothers. The suspect reportedly sought the assistance of another individual, leading to the violent confrontation.
He added that the arrested suspects are currently undergoing police interrogation, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.
The police spokesperson assured that more details will be made available as the investigation progresses, even as he reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and public safety across the state.
