In a major development, the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service year from one year to two years. This new initiative aims to further equip Corps members with enhanced skills and greater opportunities for national service.

The proposal was unveiled during a courtesy visit to Dr. Alausa’s office in Abuja by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). In addition to the extension of the service year, Dr. Alausa also suggested expanding the curriculum of the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

According to the Minister, the proposed changes aim to better prepare Corps members for life after service by providing them with more comprehensive training in various sectors, enhancing their employability, and contributing more effectively to national development. He emphasized that the extended service year would allow Corps members to develop a deeper understanding of the diverse needs of Nigeria, creating a more impactful and sustainable service experience.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the importance of expanding the SAED programme. He noted that by offering a wider range of skill sets and entrepreneurial tools, the NYSC could empower the youth to create businesses, reduce unemployment, and foster innovation in various industries across the country.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu expressed support for the proposal, stating that the NYSC has always been committed to the development of Nigerian youth and that the changes could strengthen the programme’s overall impact.
