The Anambra State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all exercise activities at the Ekwueme Square Boulevard in Awka, the state capital, until further notice.
In a special announcement issued on Sunday by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Hon. Ossy Onuko, residents were advised to use alternative fitness centres and other open spaces within the city for their exercise and fitness routines.
While no reason was disclosed for the suspension, the directive is said to be with immediate effect and is expected to be adhered to by all residents.
Alex Ekwueme Square (popularly known as Ekwueme Square), is a main square in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State. It is named after Nigeria’s first civilian Vice President, Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme.
Prior to this suspension, the Square, which has been a venue for major political rallies and other mega events in the state, also served as space for different kinds of sporting activities, exercises and games for many people and groups, especially on Saturdays.
The Square has also recently undergone renovation, upgrading and general facelift by the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
