At least 25 persons have been confirmed dead and four others seriously injured following a deadly attack by armed men on Kimakpa Village in Miango District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State in the early hours of Monday.
According to intelligence sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, the attackers stormed the quiet village around 2:45 a.m., opening fire on residents and setting parts of the community into chaos. The brutal assault left several homes destroyed and families displaced.
Residents immediately alerted security agencies, prompting a swift response from a combined team of troops from the Nigerian Army, led by the Sector Commander, alongside personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Mobile Force stationed in Miango.
The security operatives reportedly engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle and were able to repel the attack. A subsequent search of the area uncovered the bodies of 25 villagers who had been killed, while four others who sustained injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Security forces have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, with extensive combing of surrounding forests already underway. Authorities have also deployed additional personnel to Kimakpa and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents.
The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have plagued rural communities in Plateau State in recent years, raising fresh concerns over the state of security in the region.
As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and investigations are ongoing. Community leaders have called on the government to bolster security presence and bring the perpetrators to justice.
