The Forum of Traditional Rulers of the Kalabari Ethnic Nationality has issued a clarion call to avert a potentially violent clash between two groups scheduled to hold events in Kalabari land on Saturday, March 15, 2025. The group has expressed grave concern over the planned events that could lead to bloodshed if not addressed promptly.
In a statement directed to the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and the heads of security agencies in the state, the traditional rulers warned of the impending risk posed by the clash of events. The political pressure group plans to hold a civic reception at the Community Secondary School Field in Abalama, Asari-Toru LGA, on the same day that the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Eastern Zone intends to host its congress at the same venue.
The traditional rulers raised alarm over the proximity of the events and the possibility of heightened tensions between the two opposing groups, which could destabilize the peaceful atmosphere in Abalama and the entire Kalabari region.
“Kalabari land cannot be the epicenter of such impending crisis,” the statement read. The Forum emphasized that the situation must be defused to avoid any disturbance or escalation of violence, calling for both parties to relocate their events to different venues or, ideally, different dates.
The traditional rulers also advised the cancellation of all events scheduled for March 15 at the Abalama Community Secondary School Field, regardless of prior permissions, to safeguard the peace of Kalabari land.
In an official statement signed by various traditional leaders, including HRH King Lawrence O. O. Odum, Amanyanabo of Bakana and Chairman of the DELGA Area Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, the Forum made a strong appeal for the parties involved to seek alternative arrangements. Other signatories to the statement include HRH Ene Dateme, Obonogina of Obonoma; HRH King Emmanuel Stephen, Dadaye VI, Amanyanabo of Ifoko; HRH King Kariboye Karibo, Amanyanabo of Idama/Ekulema; HRH King Agolia Cookey Aboko, Amanyanabo of Ke Kingdom; HRH King Iboroma Talbot Pokubo, Amanyanabo of Minama; and HRH King Stephen J. Tobins, Amanyanabo of Bukuma.
The traditional rulers have emphasized their collective commitment to maintaining peace in the region and preventing unnecessary violence. They have urged all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of the community and work together to avert any crisis.
The situation continues to unfold, and all eyes are on the actions taken by the state government and the involved parties to ensure the safety of Kalabari land.
