In a move that has sparked intense public debate and backlash, Senator Ireti Kingibe’s recent actions and comments regarding her colleague, Senator Natasha, have drawn criticism from various quarters, particularly women’s rights advocates, political analysts, and members of the Labour Party in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Appearing on Arise TV, Senator Kingibe made controversial remarks about Natasha, referring to her as a “daughter” but simultaneously condemning her over allegations linked to the sexual harassment case she filed against the Senate President. In a highly charged national broadcast, Senator Kingibe criticized Natasha’s character, pointing to alleged misdeeds that have no direct relevance to the ongoing case. This public condemnation was followed by Kingibe claiming to “plead” on Natasha’s behalf, despite her strong denunciations.

However, in a startling contradiction, Senator Kingibe, who also serves on the Senate Ethics Committee, signed off on a punitive decision that has left many questioning her motives. The punishment imposed on Senator Natasha includes a six-month suspension from the Senate, the locking of her office for the duration, and the withdrawal of her salaries and allowances, including those for her aides. Additionally, Natasha’s security detail has been revoked, and she is now banned from approaching the Senate building.

For many, the juxtaposition of Kingibe’s public denouncement of Natasha followed by her endorsement of such a severe punishment raises serious ethical concerns. Critics argue that the actions taken against Natasha are more about political maneuvering than justice.

“The hypocrisy displayed by Senator Kingibe is alarming,” said a source close to the Labour Party in the FCT. “How can you claim to plead on someone’s behalf while simultaneously signing off on their punishment? This is a blatant attempt to silence Natasha and undermine her political career.”

Many believe that the suspension will backfire, ultimately benefitting Natasha in her re-election bid. The perceived injustice has sparked an outpouring of public sympathy, with political observers suggesting that it could galvanize voter support for the embattled senator.

The Northern Minority Consultative Forum of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed solidarity with Natasha, stating that the suspension is a politically motivated move to undermine her. “This act of injustice will only fuel Natasha’s popularity as voters rally behind her in support of her fight for justice,” a spokesperson for the Forum said.

The Labour Party in the FCT has also vowed to remove Senator Kingibe from office in 2027 unless she decamps to another political party. “Senator Kingibe’s actions are a disgrace to womanhood and to the Senate,” the party’s statement reads. “She should never return to the Senate. We will ensure she is voted out in 2027.”

While the full ramifications of this political battle remain to be seen, the events have ignited a larger conversation about accountability, the treatment of women in politics, and the need for solidarity among female lawmakers. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Senator Kingibe’s actions will be deemed as an attempt to protect the Senate’s reputation or an effort to push out a colleague with whom she disagrees politically.

For now, all eyes are on the Senate and its ongoing handling of the case, as well as on the 2027 elections, which promise to be a defining moment in the political careers of both Natasha and Kingibe.
