The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a strong statement condemning the oppressive actions of the Kaduna State government and the alleged misuse of federal security agencies in persecuting opposition leaders.
In a public address, the party’s leadership expressed deep concern over what they described as an alarming pattern of political harassment and victimization directed at opposition figures within the state. The SDP claims that the Kaduna State government, under the leadership of Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has increasingly resorted to oppressive tactics to stifle dissent and intimidate political opponents.
The party further accused the state government of exploiting federal security agencies for political purposes, leveraging their power to suppress opposition voices and undermine the democratic process.
“The actions of the Kaduna State government and its use of federal security agencies to target and persecute opposition leaders represent a dangerous and unacceptable abuse of power. This is not only an assault on our fundamental rights but a direct threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy,” the SDP statement read.
The party stressed the importance of unity in addressing these issues, calling on Nigerians, especially political parties and civil society organizations, to come together in defending democracy, justice, and the rule of law.
The statement continued, “We must all stand up to oppression and the abuse of power to safeguard our democracy and protect the sovereignty of our nation.”
The SDP has vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure that such actions do not go unchecked, and they have called for national and international attention to the growing political intimidation happening in Kaduna and other states. The party also urged the federal government to take decisive action to prevent the continued misuse of security agencies in politically motivated harassment.
This statement has sparked a wider conversation about the state of democracy and the protection of opposition rights in Nigeria, with political analysts urging both state and federal authorities to exercise restraint and ensure the safety of all citizens, particularly those involved in the political opposition.
As tensions continue to rise, observers are calling for a swift resolution to prevent further erosion of democratic freedoms in the country.
