The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially released the guidelines for the forthcoming local government elections, fixing August 9, 2025, as the date for the polls.
In a statement issued by the Commission, RSIEC assured political parties, candidates, and the general public of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election across the 23 local government areas of the state. The guidelines outline the electoral timetable, eligibility criteria, nomination process, and code of conduct for political parties and candidates participating in the election.
RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd.), emphasized the Commission’s dedication to upholding democratic principles, urging all stakeholders to abide by the rules. “We are committed to ensuring a transparent electoral process that reflects the will of the people. Political parties, candidates, and voters must conduct themselves in accordance with the law,” he stated.
According to RSIEC, the timetable for the election includes the following key dates:
• April 15 – May 10, 2025: Collection and submission of nomination forms by political parties.
• May 15 – June 30, 2025: Screening of candidates.
• July 1 – August 7, 2025: Electioneering campaigns.
• August 9, 2025: Local Government Elections.
RSIEC also reiterated that only registered political parties can sponsor candidates for the election, and all contestants must meet the constitutional requirements set by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and the Rivers State Local Government Law.
The announcement has set the stage for intense political activities as parties strategize to contest for chairmanship and councillorship positions across the state. Political analysts predict a keenly contested election, especially considering the political landscape in Rivers State.
The Rivers State Government, security agencies, and civil society organizations have also been urged to collaborate with RSIEC to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
With the elections just five months away, all eyes are on RSIEC to deliver a transparent and hitch-free poll that will shape the governance of Rivers State at the grassroots level.
