Protesters in Kabalari, a community in Rivers State, caused a stir earlier today as they dismantled a billboard of Former Governor Nyesom Wike. The incident occurred during his visit to the region for the flag-off of a new federal government project, which is expected to boost infrastructure and development in the area.
The protesters, whose identities are still being verified, gathered in large numbers as the FCT Minister convoy made its way into the community. Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd expressed their dissatisfaction with the Wike and APC government, with some locals seen pulling down the billboard bearing the former governor’s image.
This act of protest comes amidst growing discontent in some parts of the state over various governance issues, more especially his fight with Governor Fubara among few to mentioned, although no official statement has been issued yet by Wike’s media aide or the protesters. The Minister office has yet to comment on the matter, but sources close to Wike suggest that security personnel on the ground were able to quickly control the situation, preventing it from escalating further.
The project that Wike was scheduled to flag off is said to be part of the Federal Government larger efforts to improve road infrastructure and economic development in the region. It remains to be seen how this incident will impact the event and the overall reception of the project among the residents of Kabalari and surrounding areas.
As more details emerge, the public awaits further clarification from both the Minister’s office and the protesting groups.
Details will follow as the situation develops.
