The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Minority Consultative Forum has launched a fierce critique of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, questioning the perceived ceremonial role of Vice President Kashim Shettima under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement that has stirred political debate, the Forum pointed out that while the first sons of past Nigerian leaders such as Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Muhammadu Buhari were largely kept out of the limelight, Vice President Shettima has become a focal point of controversy. The Forum questioned why, under this administration, the office of the Vice President seems to have taken a backseat, with the country’s second-in-command seldom seen in active governance roles.

“Throughout Nigerian history, the roles of the first sons of past leaders have remained mostly behind the scenes. However, in the case of President Tinubu’s government, the situation appears drastically different, as the first son now holds the position of vice president,” the Forum remarked. “It is baffling to see how a vice presidency, which should be integral to the nation’s leadership, has seemingly become a ceremonial position under the current government.”

The Forum further raised concerns about the visibility and influence of Shettima in the administration, claiming that the Vice President’s absence from key public events and discussions has led to a perception that the office holds little weight in the Tinubu government. Daure David stated.

“Can Nigerians truly say that the office of the Vice President is functional? When was the last time the public heard from Vice President Kashim Shettima on national matters?” the statement questioned. “Is this administration withholding crucial information from the Nigerian people? This lack of transparency is troubling.”

While the APC has yet to respond to these allegations, the PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum has urged Nigerians to reflect on the true state of the country’s leadership and governance. They called for greater clarity on the role of the Vice President and a more accountable government that prioritizes the interests of the citizens.

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 general elections, the role of the Vice President in the Tinubu administration is becoming a topic of increasing scrutiny. Observers will be watching closely to see how this controversy evolves and whether it has any impact on the APC’s political fortunes.
