Mr. Donald Mbamah allegedly killed a secondary school boy, Paul Victor, 16, who entered his compound to retrieve a football.
According to a report available to Newsmen on Wednesday, the incident which happened on Monday is causing panic in the area.
Neighbors told our correspondent that the boy who was playing football with his school mates was allegedly shot by Mbamah after the teenager went into his compound to retrieve the football.
The boy was rushed to the Imo State Specialists Hospital in Umuguma where he was lying critical.
One of the neighbors, Justin Madu said ” the name of the school is Development Secondary School at World Bank area of Owerri. The man who allegedly shot the boy is Mr Donald Mbamah. He owns a school and the name is Per Excellence Nursery and Primary School.
“The man allegedly shot the boy as he entered his compound to retrieve the football he was playing with his mates. The boy was rushed to the Imo State Specialists Hospital in Umuguma. Our prayer is that the boy should not die.
” The man has been arrested by the operatives of New Owerri police Division. Today, Tuesday we have visited the police division and we have equally visited the boy at the hospital and we ensured that medical treatment was commenced on the boy.
“The boy is 16 years old and we the neighborhood youths are interested in the boy’s survival.
The youth President of the Area, Kenneth Ozioma, told our correspondent in a telephone conversation that himself on the other youths had visited the victim at the hospital where was rushed to and also went to the New Owerri Police Division.
He said he was making sure that there was no breakdown of law and order in the area as the youths were agitated.
Another neighbor said that the boy never entered the suspect’s compound. According to him, the boy was on top of the fence begging the man to give him his football. He said that the house owner went in brought his gun and allegedly shot the boy.
He said, ” the boy never entered the man’s compound. He was on his perimeter fence begging him to give him his football. Instead of giving the teenager his football, he went inside, brought out his gun and shot the school boy. The boy was rushed to Imo Specialists Hospital in Umuguma where scan has proven that he was shot.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, said that the suspect whom he gave his name as Dr Donald Mbamah, 64, has been arrested and detained at the New Owerri police Division.
Okoye, said that the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri for a thorough investigation.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the operatives of the command were working to retrieve the rifle and the suspect would charged to court if implicated by the police investigation.
