Comrade (Mrs) Chika Grace Chukwudozie stands as a towering figure in education, trade unionism, leadership, and philanthropy. A woman of immense strength, unwavering resolve, and uncommon dedication, she has spent her life breaking barriers, inspiring excellence, and shaping the future of many. Her emergence as the Eminent Woman of the Year 2025 is a testament to her outstanding contributions to society, both in service and in impact.
Born on April 2, 1972, into the esteemed family of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Nwokedi of Umuomukwe Amakwa Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, she was destined for greatness. Her birth was met with excitement and deep expectations, leading to her parents naming her Chika, meaning “God is supreme,” and Grace, symbolizing divine favor that speaks on her behalf. These names became prophetic, guiding her through life’s journey with resilience and an unyielding faith. Even in the face of early adversity—losing her beloved mother at a tender age—she remained steadfast, nurtured under the tutelage of her father and stepmother, growing into the exceptional woman she is today.
From childhood, she displayed brilliance and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. She began her primary education at Alasi Primary School, Agbor, where she distinguished herself academically. This burning desire for excellence propelled her to Mary Mount College, Agbor, Delta State, where she emerged as one of the best students in her Senior School Certificate Examination. Her passion for learning saw her push further, securing a place at Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, where she defied stereotypes by excelling in Mathematics—an area often dominated by men. Her academic journey continued at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she earned her first degree in Mathematics Education. Unrelenting in her pursuit of academic excellence, she obtained a Master’s degree in Science Education (Mathematics) from Madonna University, Okija.
Beyond academics, her personal life is a testament to the beauty of love and commitment. As a woman of grace and discipline, she found her perfect match in Chief Clement Chukwudozie of Egbema Ozubulu, a union blessed with three responsible children, all of whom are excelling in their academic pursuits.
Comrade Chukwudozie’s professional journey has been marked by excellence and transformative leadership. Her teaching career began in private and mission schools before her official employment in the Anambra State Government Secondary School System in 2011. Throughout her career, she has served in various institutions, earning a reputation as a master in demystifying Mathematics for her students. Her professional experience spans notable institutions, including Seat of Wisdom Secondary School, St. Michael’s Secondary School, Grundtvig International Secondary School, and Catholic Girls’ Secondary School, Ozubulu, where she has played critical roles as a Mathematics Teacher, Vice Principal, Principal, Head of Department, PTA Secretary, and Staff Welfare Chairman.
Her leadership prowess is not confined to the classroom. She has held numerous influential positions across various organizations, proving her mettle as an astute administrator. From serving as Secretary, Treasurer, and Chairman of Umuenube Women (Home & Abroad) to leading the Umunkwejir Progressive Union (Women’s Wing) and the Catholic Women Organization (CWO), her impact is deeply felt across communities. Her selfless service also extends to the Ozubulu Development Union (ODU), where she plays a crucial role in women’s affairs and financial management.
A fearless advocate for workers’ rights, Comrade Chukwudozie is a leading voice in trade unionism. Her desire to speak up for others propelled her to serve as the Chairman of the Ekwusigo Branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) from 2018 to 2023. In a keenly contested election on August 29, 2023, she emerged as the State Chairman of the NUT, Anambra State, in a landslide victory, solidifying her reputation as a bold, intelligent, and results-driven leader. Under her tenure, the union has witnessed remarkable transformation, with policies that prioritize teachers’ welfare and ensure fairness in service. Her remarkable contributions earned her a place in the National Executive Council of the Union and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership, where she serves as a Vice Chairperson. Within a short period, she has redefined leadership in the union, standing firm against injustice and tirelessly advocating for the rights of her members.
Her exceptional leadership has earned her numerous accolades, including: Best Teacher Award (Catholic Girls Secondary School, Ozubulu, 2022); Award of Recognition for Promoting Education in Ekwusigo LGA (by HRH Igwe Nnamdi Fidelis Oruche, Obi of Ozubulu); Honorary Award from the Ozubulu Development Union; Recognition by St. Michael’s Boys Secondary School Ozubulu as the fourth and only female principal for her outstanding contributions; Most Punctual Teacher Award (Catholic Girls Secondary School, Ozubulu).
Her dedication to trade unionism and educational development has taken her to several countries, including South Africa, Zambia, Turkey, Angola, and Zimbabwe, where she has actively participated in high-level conferences and international engagements.
Despite her numerous accomplishments, Comrade Chukwudozie remains a woman of compassion and generosity. She is a philanthropist at heart, committed to extending helping hands to the needy within her community and beyond. Her philosophy in life is simple yet profound: “To add value to any institution I find myself in and to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me.”
A dedicated wife, loving mother, accomplished educator, fearless unionist, and an icon of hope, Comrade Chika Grace Chukwudozie remains a role model and an inspiration to many. Her story is a prove to what can be achieved through hard work, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to service. As an Honourable Ex-Officio Member of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), she continues to push for reforms that uplift the educational sector and improve learning outcomes for future generations.
Above all, she always attributes her success to God, acknowledging His unlimited favor, guidance, and direction in her journey.
