Tensions flared in Gombe State after a violent incident involving angry youths attacking the convoy of Governor Inuwa Yahaya shortly after the Eid prayer marking the end of the 2025 Ramadan fasting. The attack occurred in the heart of the state capital, as the Governor was making his way from the prayer grounds.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of youths began to chant “Bamayi,” which translates to “we don’t want him” in the local dialect, as they confronted the Governor’s convoy. The protest quickly turned violent, and the situation escalated when the youths began throwing stones at the vehicles in the convoy.
Tragically, three youths were confirmed dead in the aftermath of the attack, though the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear. Several others were reported to have sustained varying degrees of injury, though their conditions remain unconfirmed at this time.
Security agencies swiftly intervened, deploying forces to the scene to restore order. The situation was eventually calmed, and normalcy has returned to the area. However, tensions are still high as authorities continue to assess the situation.
At the time of filing this report, efforts to reach a representative for Governor Yahaya or obtain an official statement from his office have proven unsuccessful.
Authorities have vowed to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring those responsible for the violence to justice. Meanwhile, residents of Gombe remain on edge, and calls for calm have been issued by local leaders.
This attack marks a troubling development in the state’s ongoing political climate, and many are questioning the underlying reasons for the outburst of anger against the Governor. Further updates on the investigation are expected as more details emerge.
