The missing corpses of the sixteen suspected cultists shortly after they were killed has set the Anambra Police Command and the former Deputy President General of Awka Development Union Nigeria ADUN Bar Raphel Nzekwe on a war of words.

Recall that the Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam had raised an alarm that families of the sixteen suspected cultists killed in Nibo Awka South local government area last Sunday carried the corpses away for burial hence obstructing police investigation.

But Bar Raphel Nzekwe contended that the carrying away of corpses of cultists is the fault of the police alleging that families of the deceased pay between N600,000 to N1 million before the bodies are released to them for burial.

“The Police are the cause because if someone is killed by cultists the police would come to carry the body for investigations ”

“But you will pay through your nose for the body to be released and you spend up to N600,000 .00 for the remains to be released for burial”

“So the families would hurriedly take the corpses away for burial and when the police comes they will not see the body”

Continuing Nzekwe noted that ” When the police takes the bodies they will keep them in a mug and start to extort money from their families and before you recover the body you will up to N1 million ”

“I am not just a legal practitioner but a Justice of Peace and I have the powers to sign the coronas inquest form just like a Magistrate and I ask the family why are you in a hurry to bury the corpses and they tell me that the police would continue to ask for money before the bodies are released ” he said.

Nzekwe however lamented the poor welfare scheme for Police men in the state adding that in the entire Anambra Police Command with about seven Area Commands there is no Armoured Personnel Carries APC to fight insecurity.

“You cannot blame the police or security operatives for the state of insecurity in Anambra state or Awka South in particular because they do not have operational vehicles to do their job ”

“For example we have about seven Area Commands in Anambra state Police Command but we do not have a single operational Armoured Personnel Carrier APC and the one they have I am sure that it is in a state of disrepair ”

“Again you give pomp action rifle or double barrel guns to the Vigilante Services AVS while the criminals use AK 47 rifles and even the police are also afraid and when you look at what happened at Nibo last Sunday you would discover that both the police and the vigilante groups cannot fight them back due to poor welfare package as well as lack of operational vehicles ” he said.
