In a bold move aimed at addressing escalating leadership disputes within the Nigeria Labour Party (LP), the Labour Party USA has announced the formation of a 12-member Conflict Resolution Taskforce (CRT). This initiative comes in response to the recent turmoil surrounding the controversial non recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and establishment of a stakeholders caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, which has been backed by prominent figures including His Excellency Alex Otti and the Party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

The emergence of this caretaker committee has raised significant concerns, as it seemingly sidelines the leadership of Barr Julius Abure. The leadership crisis has been exacerbated by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) refusal to recognize Barr Abure’s team, creating a leadership vacuum that the caretaker committee aims to fill. However, the installation of this new leadership has faced delays, as INEC has postponed its recognition of the Nenadi-led committee pending the resolution of a case filed by the Labour Party in a Federal High Court in Abuja. This legal action challenges the party’s exclusion from INEC’s refresher training for uploading party agents, a crucial step ahead of the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

In light of these internal disagreements, the Labour Party USA’s Conflict Resolution Taskforce is tasked with fostering peace and reconciliation among party members. By promoting stronger collaboration and understanding, the CRT aims to ensure that the Labour Party presents a united front as it approaches the critical 2027 presidential elections. This proactive approach signals a commitment to overcoming divisions and strengthening the party’s foundation for future success..

In a formal letter signed by Professor Eddie Oparaoji, Chairman of LP USA, and Pharm/Mrs. Chy Esoro, Secretary, the initiative was communicated to prominent stakeholders, including His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Mr. Alex Otti, Barr Julius Abure, Alhaji Umar Farouk, and Senator Nenadi Usman. The letter stresses the importance of addressing disputes within the Party to secure its long-term success and viability in Nigeria’s political landscape.

*The 12-Member Taskforce*

The Taskforce comprises an esteemed panel of individuals selected for their experience and dedication to the Party’s mission. Its members are:

1. *Pastor Emmanuel Uba* (Chairman)
2. *Ambassador AJU Elumelu* (Vice Chairman/Secretary)
3. *Mrs. Nancy Durodola*
4. *Mr. Chijike Ndukwu*
5. *Dr. Promise Okafor*
6. *Dr. Reubie Ekeh*
7. *Dr. Genny Nwigwe*
8. *Dr. Uche Okafor*
9. *High Chief Joachim Nwogu*
10. *Pharm/Mrs. Chy Esoro*
11. *Chief Sonny Arokwe*
12. *Professor Eddie Oparaoji*

*Mission and Terms of Reference*

The Conflict Resolution Taskforce has been tasked with three key responsibilities:

The Taskforce will conduct an in-depth assessment of the internal disputes and grievances, working with representatives of all factions to identify the root causes. A detailed report will be submitted within two months, providing an overview of the issues at hand.

2. *Mediation and Negotiation*
Following the initial assessment, the Taskforce will arrange mediation sessions aimed at fostering dialogue and compromise between party factions. External and internal stakeholders will be involved to ensure transparency throughout the process.

3. *Establishing a Framework for Long-Term Collaboration*
The Taskforce will create a framework that promotes sustained cooperation within the Party, including principles of governance and decision-making processes. The final proposal will be presented to Party leadership after six months.

*Strengthening the Party for Future Success*

In their letter, Professor Oparaoji and Pharm/Mrs. Esoro called on all stakeholders to embrace this initiative with an open mind, emphasizing the significance of unity as the Party prepares for the 2027 elections. They warned that divisions could weaken the Party and jeopardize its role as the primary opposition in Nigeria, potentially derailing the hopes of millions of Nigerians for a better future.

*Independence from External Influence*

The Labour Party USA strongly advocates for internal resolution of disputes without interference from external forces, such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or the All Progressives Congress (APC). They believe that self-governance is key to maintaining the Party’s integrity and strength. External interference, they argue, undermines the Labour Party’s ability to function independently and represent its constituents.

By fostering constructive dialogue and maintaining internal unity, the Labour Party USA seeks to build a stronger foundation for the Party to succeed in the upcoming 2027 elections.
