Anambra: Police Give Update on Collapsed Two-Storey Building

Yet-to-be-confirmed number of persons were feared dead in Anambra State on Thursday, following the collapse of a two-storey in the state.

Reports have it that the incident, which occured at the ever-busy Eke Amawbia Market in Awka, came with a thunderous sound at in the noon hours of the day when the market was still full to the brim, with traders carrying out their daily businesses.

It was further gathered that many people were trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building, while rescue efforts began immediately, both from the eyewitnesses and security personnel who rushed to the scene.

Confirming the incident in a statement issued to newsmen, the Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the operatives have rescued two victims and taken them to the hospital for medical care.

He said: “In response to a distress call today 4/7/2024 at about 12:40 pm of a building collapse at Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia, Police Operatives have rescued two victims and taken them to the hospital for medical care.

“Meanwhile, on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led operatives at the scene for on-the-spot assessment, the area has been cordoned off and rescue Operations are still ongoing.”
