Onitsha market chairman drags Police, others to court over human rights infringement

The caretaker committee chairman of Onitsha Bridge head market, Anambra State, Chief Chinedu Ezekweike, has dragged the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG), incharge of zone 13, Ukpo, Mr. Tony Olofun, and one Edward, who is the Investigation Police Officer, IPO, and five others to a high court in Onitsha, over purported infringement on his fundamental human rights.

Other five defendants dragged alongside the police to court were members of the caretaker committee that included, comrade Pascal Ezekwere, Sir Nobert Okoli, Hon. Obinna Umeh, Sir Peter Okala and Chief Bonaventure Ucheagwu.

In the suit No. O/M/5e/227/2023, the suit read thus,:”In the matter of an application of Chinedu Ezekweike, for the enforcement of his fundamental right to personal liberty and freedom of movement under section 35 and 46 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Recall that the chairman and some of his caretaker committee members have been at loggerhead over issue of rendering of account of leadership which prompted the caretaker members reporting the matter to the zone 13 police I Command that in turn invited the two warring factions..

However, the move to investigate the issue turned to a new dimension as the chairman sued the police and few of the caretaker members insisting that only the State Government that gave him the appointment has the power to investigate him.

“I have not been accused of embezzlement of market money by the government that gave me the job. I am answerable only to the government, ” he affirmed.
