AFCON 2025: Ghana considering bid to co-host with Nigeria

Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif, confirms Ghana is considering making a bid to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with one of its neighbouring countries.

Ghana Football Association have confirmed discussions have been held about co-hosting the 35th edition of the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) alongside either Nigeria or neighbours Benin.

The 2025 AFCON was originally supposed to be staged in Guinea but the country was stripped of the hosting rights by Africa;s footballing body – CAF after they were deemed as insufficiently prepared.

According to a report from Pulse Sports Ghana, the Republic of Ghana could also put in a bid to host the AFCON in 2025, with the Sports Minister confirming that it is under consideration.

He confirmed this during the Walk with the Legends event organized by the GFA to garner support for the Black Stars ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

There is a discussion that Ghana should bid with the likes of Nigeria and Benin, Mustapha Ussif said, as quoted by Citi Sports.

So far, Morocco, Algeria and Senegal have been mooted as some of the countries that are ready to replace Guinea as host.

Ghana last hosted the AFCON in 2008, with the Black Stars finishing third in that tournament.

The Black Stars also stopped the Super Eagles of Nigeria from qualifying from Novembers showpiece in Qatar after besting the Eagles in the jollof derby.

Ghana will also be joined by Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco and last AFCON hosts Cameroon.
