The member representing Isu state Constituency in Imo House of Assembly, Mrs. Ngozi Obiefule has asked that women are fully integrated in mainstream politics of Nigeria to ensure a level playing for both men and women.
The lawmaker urged the National Assembly to enact a law that will make the 30 percent female affirmative more effective.
She was addressing Imo women during the 2021 International Women’s Day celebration held held last weekend in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
She further frowned at the way women are despised and ridiculed when they try to take a shot in politics, asking that they are allowed the opportunity to prove their mettle rather than discouraging them.
“It is incumbent on the female legislators at the National Assembly to push for this because, we at the state level cannot do it.
“Take for instance, in Imo state House of Assembly, we are two femake lawmakers out of the 27 lawmakers. Is that a fair share? There is need for full participation of women in politics.
“We should imitate some other countries like Rwanda where women are given equal opportunity in politics.
“We should even be advocating for 35 percent affirmative and not the 30 percent which is not even implementable.
“It is glaring that women are marginalized in Nigeria’s politics and this is not healthy for the political growth of the country,” she concluded.
