2nd August 2020,

President Muhammadu Buhari,

President and Commander in Chief,

Federal Republic of Nigeria,  State House, Abuja.

Your Excellency,

Re-ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION AGAINST MR ABUBAKAR MALAMI (SAN) ATTORNEY GENERAL AND MINISTER OF JUSTICE.

The CPA is a coalition of seven frontline anti-corruption and civil society organizations. We have been opportune to play the role of great patriots and supporter of your administration’s war against corruption alongside the authors of the petition against your good self.

We must for the record, appreciate the heroic and cooperative roles played by the petitioners in the fight against corruption, but more importantly, we must never allow personal relationship with officials and leaders of anti-corruption institutions to affect our commitments in the battle for justice, fair play and accountability in public office. “For he that comes to equity must come with clean hands’’.

While we commend your efforts towards ridding our polity of corruption and other vices, we cannot but applaud your timely efforts in setting up the Justice Ayo Salami (Rtd.) panel to look into the operations and activities of the Economic

and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the suspended Acting Chairman of the EFCC.

Again, we say congratulations for taking this monster-bull by the horns.

Our attention was drawn to some media reports where petitions were purported to have been written and some allegations made against the current Attorney General and Minister of Justice. Some very alarming information and allegations of abuse of office, graft and corrupt practices  were presented in the said petition.

While we are not out to defend or hold briefs for the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Malami, as we will only appreciate if all issues raised in the petition are properly investigated.

Our concerns and view are that the signatories to these petitions are known allies and friends of the suspended Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu. It is a thing of public knowledge that their relationship is beyond official and are not limited to civil society’s partnership with the office of the suspended Acting Chairman.

Our concern is that the petition is at best an effort to not only distract the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel as constituted by your good office, but also to further truncate and discredit whatever is the outcome of the noble and timely effort.

It is generally believed that Mr. Magu’s travails was orchestrated by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and as such must be used as a smokescreen to enable Mr. Magu escape from giving account of his stewardship.

OUR VIEW

It is in our own view that each case must be treated on its own merit and as such the Ayo Salami-led panel be allowed to do his job to the hilt. The petitioners must be put under oath to establish their bias or otherwise, as it cannot be denied that their personal relationship and vested interests with Mr. Magu was what informed the said petition.

Once more, we wish to congratulate your government for giving teeth and a new life to the fight against corruption.

Kindly accept the assurance of our kind regards always Sir.

Yours Sincerely,

Comrade Rasaq Oladosu Coordinator

Comrade Olufemi Lawson  Secretary
