A cross-section of Enugu residents on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to honour Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman during the June, 1993 presidential election.

Some residents, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Enugu, said that Prof. Nwosu should be honoured for the roles he played during the June 12 election.

Mr Julius Onuigbo, a legal practitioner, said that Nwosu conducted the June 12, 1993 election, which was seen as the freest and fairest election to date, in which Late Chief Moshood Abiola was presumed to have won.

Onuigbo noted that Nwosu’s commission introduced the novel option A4 system voting system and the open ballot system.

According to him, the former NEC Chairman went through intimidation during and after the whole processes of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“I believe that by looking at Nwosu’s personality, his roles in the June 12, 1993 election and the intimidation he got, he deserved to be honoured and awarded for a job well done,” he said.

Mr Okechukwu Ibe, an Educationist, said that in as much as Late MKO Abiola had been honoured and June 12 declared Nigeria’s democracy day, it was also important that the man, who conducted the election, should be recognised.

Mrs Nneka Agu, a Sociologist lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for having the political will and strength to remember and honour Chief MKO Abiola for the Supreme sacrifice he paid for Nigerians to enjoy democracy till date.
