The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has hailed the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for signing the bill prohibiting violence against persons which will encourage gender parity and equality.
NAWOJ disclosed this on Thursday in a statement signed by the chairperson and the secretary, Flora Bossey and Rosemary Okoduwa, to celebrate the International Women’s Day.
It will be recalled that Obaseki signed the bill prohibiting violence against persons in February aftermath of the rally organised by members of Federation of International Women Lawyers, and Human rights group
Every Eight day of March is marked as International Women’s Day; It is a global day when women are recognized for their achievements irrespective of divisions, ethnicity linguistic, cultural, economic or political. Also, it marks a call to action for stimulating gender equality.
While marking the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2019 with the theme, “Balance for Better”, NAWOJ congratulated all Edo women especially female journalists in Edo State, and noted that more work needs to be done if women are to achieve functional parity.
According to them, the 2019 International Women’s Day is remarkable this year as it coincides with the month of election where women have played a key role in electing the country’s leaders.
“Edo NAWOJ, therefore uses this occasion to commend all Edo women for their hard work, resilience and commitment to the development of our society.
“Edo NAWOJ urged the government and other key stakeholders to work towards achieving 35% affirmative action for women”.
