NDLEA Raises Alarm Over New Methods Of Supplying Codeine In Kano

The Commander, National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Command, Hamza Umar, MNI, has raise the alarm over new methods use in supplying codeine in the state.
He raised the alarm on Thursday in Kano during a one day sensitization programme organized by the command in collaboration with Kuramo Industries Ltd, makers of Alabukun, under the theme; Socio-Economic Implications of Drug Abuse in Kano.
It would be recalled that, the Federal Government, recently banned the importation and production of any product containing codeine in a bid to curtail the prevalence of drug abuse cases in the country.
Hamza, revealed that new methods employed by those in the business of supplying codeine includes, production of codeine capsules which was not known before now, and rebranding the product in an unsuspecting packs with a baby’s picture, giving the impression that the product is syrup for babies whereas, the content is nothing but the band product.
Speaking to news men at the public lecture, Hamza said, the fight against drug abuse is a collective one, stressing that every stakeholder must come together to fight the menace which has destroyed many lives noting that drug abuse is the major motivating factor to committing crimes.
The Commander said there is the need for curriculum planners to as a matter of urgency, introduce a special subject in school curriculums that would educate the young ones at the primary and secondary school level on the dangers of drug abuse and ways to avoid been influenced by peer groups.
In the same vein, he called on the general public not to hesitate to report to the command any person or group of persons who engage in such businesses as the command remains committed in the fight to rid the state of drug abuse cases.
Representative of the company, Tope David, said, the company is partnering with the agency as part of its corporate social responsibility to the society.
He urged other stakeholders to join in the crusade against drug abuse in other to have a society free of hard drugs and heinous crimes.
