By Yakubu Salisu A, Kano

Kano state commissioner of environment Honorable Haruna Aliyu Makoda represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Halilu Baba Dantiye has expressed displeasure over blockage of water ways by some residents of the state.

Dantiye who observed that many water ways have been blocked by either refuse dump or construction of illegal structures, described the situation as unacceptable and dangerous to residents and businesses premises of such areas, stressing that the ministry would make necessary suggestions to the state government to demolish such illegal structures so as to avoid destruction of lives and properties as a result of flood.

He made this known on Saturday during the end of the Month sanitation exercise inspection.

According to him, “you can see that this particular sanitation exercise is observed in a rainy condition and we have seen with our own very eyes how water ways have been completely blocked with refuse and illegal structures which has already caused flood at Shahuci Magistrate Court”

“ This we must stop. We cannot allow some persons to continue such unhealthy practices that poses danger to the environment and the well being of the people of the state”

Meanwhile, a traffic officer with Kano state road traffic agency ( KAROTA) was arrested for giving a commercial driver cover during the 8-10am no movement hours and currently under police custody for proper prosecution to serve as deterrent to others.

The officer named JN Inuwa, sat at the front of the vehicle under the pretense that the driver was under arrest, enabling the driver to convey passengers in his tinted car without drawing the attention of security personnel. Five girls whom were on their way to the market were however discovered in the trunk of his car.

During the end of the Month of June exercise, a total number of 56 defaulters were arrested by the supervision tasked force and fined a total sum of 55,150 by the Mobile Court Judges that participated in the exercise.

Residents of the state are enjoined to comply with the monthly sanitation exercise by ensuring that their environment is always neat and tidy and desist from the bad habit of erecting structures on water ways and should as a matter of urgency, stop using drainages as refuse dumps.
