Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has charged journalists to exercise their profession within the ambit of the law and uphold the ethics of the journalism profession in order to further deepen democracy and good governance in the interest of the nationโ€™s development.

A statement issued by the commissioner for information, youth and culture, Malam Muhammad Garba on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Governor says while media practitioners are a powerful tool for agenda setting, they should equally be mindful of the laws guiding the conduct of their constituted responsibilities.

He says as partners in progress, journalists should continue to dedicate themselves to the tenets of their profession by being factual so as to sustain the credibility of the media in Nigeria.

Governor Ganduje acknowledges the contributions of the media right from Nigeriaโ€™s struggle for independence from colonial masters, through to military dictatorships, impunity by political actors and oppressive governments, assuring that his administration will continue to maintain its media friendly posture.

โ€˜โ€™We enjoy the freest environment for expression of public opinion in the media,ย  despite many cases of professional misconduct. Since assumption of office nearly three years ago, there was never any attempt to gag the media or arrest any journalist performing his professional duty, โ€˜โ€™ he said.

The governor also assures that his administration remain committed to the development of the media and is therefore making huge investment to ensuring that it plays its vital role as medium of mass communication to promoting the unity of the country and deepening democracy.

While felicitating with the press on this occasion, Governor Ganduje further urges journalists to as a matter of priority actualize their potential to strategically manage all communications in the public domain.
