The Federal Road Safety Corps in Benue state says it has challenges of lack of basic operational tools to effectively perform its duties and obligations on the nation’s highways.
The Sector Commander in charge of Benue State, Mr David Udoaka Mendie stated this, Thurday, in his office , in Makurdi, while speaking to 247ureports on the 2018 target of the organization.
Mendie said the absence of heavy duty towing trucks and ambulances to move victims of road traffic crashes were still challenges to the operational activities of the Corps.
“We have personnel but we have no tools to work with. We need a heavy duty towing truck. Sometimes, we have articulated trucks broken down and before we remove it, we must look for organisations that have such trucks to hire and thisย takes time before spoilt vehicles are removed from the highways.
“At other times, we ask them to off load their good before we can get a bigger vehicle to pull them off the road” he said calling on both the state and federal government to purchase one to make their job easier.
Mr Mendie says the Organization is targeting at reducing Road Fatalities and Road Traffic Crashes, RTC, to 30 and 50 per cent respectively by the end of 2018.
According to him, implementation has began since January and tremendous results are being recorded.
He said during theย Easter period, Benue recorded only six crashes involving nine vehicles; two buses, three cars and four bikes.
“We rescued 36 people and in all these crashes, no life was lost and that is to tell you we are working towards reaching our goals,” he said.
Mendie commended the significant improvement in the compliance with the installation of speed limit devices among commercial vehicle drivers in the state saying road crashes have reduced significantly since the implementation of installation of Speed Limit Devices.
While stating the device was introduced to reduce road accidents to the barest minimum since most accidents occured as a result of over speeding, the sector commander expressed the Doors readiness to ensure thatย all road users comply.
