Watch The Trailer For ‘Sudani From Nigeria’, A Film About A Nigerian Footballer In India
–
In India, Sevens Football is a popular tournament in which teams with seven players each play for an hour in a small field. It’s a big craze in Indian cities like Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur; and, as you would imagine, African players are steadily being recruited by clubs there.
Although a good number of these players come from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Liberia, Indians generally refer to them as ‘Sudanis’.
To weave a story around African players in Sevens Football, Zakariya made Sudani From Nigeria. Starring 19-year-old Samuel Abiola Robinson (Desperate Housewives Africa), the film is about a Nigerian footballer who was brought to Kerala, India by a club manager to play in the tournament.
While exploring relationships, it also looks at how African players try to fit into the society there, the challenges they face in their career and the strong love most of them get from fans.
Speaking with The Hindu, Zakariya said:
“The film also highlights how many sponsors often fail to think beyond the game when they ‘import’ these players. They are not prepared for eventualities such as injuries.”
While we’re awaiting its release next month, you can watch the trailer below:
