The Director of Anambra State Fire Service, Mr. Martin Agbili, has called for the cooperation of landlords, Town and Regional Planners, owners of filling stations and cooking gas plants as well as the media for a fire disaster-free state.

He said such collaborative efforts of relevant stakeholders is key to preventing fire outbreaks in the state.

Speaking with newsmen in Awka, Mr. Agbili, commended the state Governor, Willie Obiano for providing more firefighting equipment for the service, but decried the dearth of fire hydrants in fighting fire incidences in the state.

He noted that the agency had severallly relied on private water sources during fire disasters due to lack of such basic facilities.

Agbili also regretted that most buildings in the state lacked fire safety designs, underscoring the need for integration of fire safety designs in the planning of buildings and cities in the state.

According to him, there had been an average of one fire outbreak a day since the last forty days, an ugly development he attributed to careless practices, Agbili

The fireman insisted

that every household should have fire extinguisher and effectively know how to use it, describing it as the fireman’s first aid equipment in the event of any outbreak.

“There is need for increased awareness on the use of domestic cooking gas which has now lbecome the commonest source of cooking among households.

“Gas cylinders should also be placed outside with periodic checks for leakage, while kitchen windows and doors should be left open for some time before igniting the gas cooker,” he added.
