New Market Owerri On Fire Hours After Gov Okorocha’s Foiled Attempt To Demolish It

The New Market along the busy Douglas Road, Owerri, Imo State, has been set on fire on Wednesday night.

The market was said to have been set on fire by some unknown person.

This happened hours after the traders foiled the Governor’s attempt to demolish the market.

The Governor had given the traders Friday, 15 December, 2017 to vacate the market in line with his claimed urban renewal programme. But suddenly the Governor  showed up on Wednesday, the 13th of December, two days before the earlier given date.

The traders were said to have resisted the Governor, with some angry traders pelting the Governor with satchet water, forcing him to beat a retreat while warning them to vacate on the earlier given date.

But Imo people were shocked to the marrow when few hours after the altercation with the Governor some unknown person set the market ablaze.

Earlier, it was reported by some women who went to buy wares at Douglas Road that some security officials shot some people in their attempt to take the market, injuring many and causing pandemonium.

However, at the time of filing this report, there was no official statement by the state government. But a source in the government  house the opposition parties must have set the market on fire in order to paint the government black.
