Only 2.1% Married Women Use Contraceptive In Bauchi – Expert

It has been observed by a known Governmental Organization (NGO) ‎that only 2.1 percent of married women in Bauchi are using a modern method of contraceptive, which is lower than the national rate of 10 percent.

The observation was made yesterday by the Country Director Health Policy Plus with funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mr. Onoriode Ezire said that because of the low practice of contraceptive in the state the population of Bauchi is likely to reach twenty six million (26m) people in 2050.

 

He explained that that the fertility rate of the state stand at 8.1 births while most women in Bauchi only need to have about four children

 

He said if the total rate of Bauchi State is reduced to around four births per woman over the next twenty years and then reaching three births per woman by 2050 the state would saved two hundred and thirty five billion naira (235b)‎ and need to trained seven hundred medical doctors more and create two million new jobs.

According to him, the state need to increase access to family planning information, services, and methods is essentials. Provide high quality family planning services and provide commodities to support those services.

 

He also pointed out that effective communication and messaging around family planning is needed saying that it would required financial support.

 

Mr. Ezire said that, decision makers in Bauchi should encourage both government and non Governmental Organization to collaborate on delivering child spacing programmes to save more lives of expectant mothers and babies.

 

In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar said his administration has given high attention to health and he is ever ready to collaborate with development partners to achieve his desire objectives in health.

 

He said since he assumed the leadership of Bauchi State health is given a special priority which is seen in his annual budget allocation as health is always given the lion share of fifteen percent of the total budget.
