Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has declared that Nigeria has no reason being in the current economic recession, adding that the crisis in the Niger Delta region was an unnecessary distraction.
Abubakar, who was at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday and had a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over “issues of national interest and international affairs”, fielded questions from the State House Correspondents on the state of the nation.
He advocated the understanding and support of Nigerians for the Buhari administration to tackle the numerous present challenges, stressing that “I hope the current administration through the assistance of all Nigerians will give a helping hand to make these crises that are unnecessary and uncalled for, we overcome them.”
When pressed to speak on the workings of the National Peace Committee which he chairs, the ex-military ruler reiterated that the committee that worked for a peaceful 2015 general elections, is still working to ensure that peace reigned supreme in the land especially amongst the political parties.
“We are still working, although quietly. We are working to make sure that there is peace in the country and all the political parties work amicably because each one has got a role to play,” he said.
