The military on Sunday said it has taken into custody militants suspected to be behind the resurgent attacks on oil installations in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
Spokesman of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who confirmed the arrests to correspondents, said suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), who have claimed responsibility for the renewed strategic attacks on key oil installations, particularly in Delta State, were detained following a Sunday morning operation in the riverine area of the state.
“This is to confirm the arrest of some suspected members of Niger Delta Avengers and further investigation into the attacks continues,” he said.
The renewed attacks on installations had affected the nation’s oil production and export significantly as the platforms operated by Shell, NNPC and Chevron have been hit by militants who stakeholders in the region describe as criminals.
