The Abia state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has called for the cancellation of the March 5 Aba North Constituency state Assembly rerun poll alleging that it was marred by ballot box snatching and other forms of violence
Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Comrade Benedict Godson, who stated in an interview with journalists in Aba, said APC agents were intimidated and beaten up by thugs suspected to have been hired by the PDP candidate.
Godson accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of hiring thugs to snatch ballot boxes at Okigwe road and Abia Polytechnic polling units while security agents looked the other way.
He lamented that his party’s candidate, Elder Uba Omenazu was attacked and beaten up at the Aba North Council secretariat by a former Transition Committee chairman of the council and a former commissioner in the state and thugs allegedly working for the PDP.
The APC Publicity scribe urged the National chairman, INEC, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu to order for the cancellation of the election and conduct of a fresh one, stressing that no election held in Aba North state constituency.
According to him, “What took place in Aba North Constituency on March 5th was not an election. The PDP hired thugs and turned the election to a theatre of violence. The PDP took it as a do or die affair. Our members were intimidated and chased out of the polling units. Over 20 APC members sustained injuries. Our candidate was beaten. Had we not called our members to exercise restraint, we would have lost some of them. We are urging INEC to cancel the result, because what we witnessed cannot be called an election.”
He further appealed for calm among APC members, stressing that they have confidence in INEC to right the injustice done to the party.
