Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has said that the era of graduates seeking white government jobs in Delta was over, insisting that his administration has over 60,000 civil servants, hence his focus now is to provide enabling environment to positively engage Delta youths in productive ventures.
Speaking at Boji Boji Owa in Ika North East council area of the state, Okowa explained that the over bloated state work force was eating deeply into the state resources, hence it has become imperative to divert the attention of youths from pursuing government jobs to other means of livelihood.
This may have necessitated the recent sack of over 3000 civil servants who were employed in the eleventh hour of the immediate past administration of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
The sacked civil servants had employed all means to reverse the governor’s decision but their efforts had not yielded any positive result in spite of the seeming intervention of the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other government functionaries.
The sacked civil servants had protested on several occasions, paid visits to various offices, especially the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour and Industrial Relations, Mike Okeme, where they were assured of reinstatement but yet to yield any positive response.
The Governor seems bent on blocking every move of the sacked civil servant, many of whom had resigned from their previous engagements before taking up the employment during the last days of Emmanuel Uduaghan.
As part of moves to that effect, Okowa has establish a job creation centre which is charged with opening skills acquisition opportunities for qualified youths where they are engaged in skills training for productive ventures.
