President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, tactically ignored Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s suggestions on what the federal government should do to address the ongoing protest in the southeastern part of the country.
Chief Onu, who is the minister of Science and Technology, at his book launch entitled “From Opposition to Governing Party: Nigeria’s APC Merger Story”, urged President Buhari-led administration to factor in the grievances of the protesting youths in the Southeastern part of the country, by assuring them that the APC government meant well for them.
But the president refused to make comment on the minister concerns when he took the state to speak.
Onu had said: “In the Southeastern part of the country, there is a growing protest. It is important that all regions are represented in an orderly manner that represents all interests. Buhari understands the plurality of Nigeria and will do everything to accommodate all.
“The Igbos need Nigeria just Nigeria needs the Igbos. We must assure the youths of the South-east that the administration of President Buhari means well for them,” Onu had earlier stated.
Surprisingly, President Buhari, while making his remarks did not address some pockets of violence that have occurred during the protests in Onitsha, Anambra state in recent days.
Buhari who traced the origin of his relationship with Dr. Onu to his days in protective custody when Ibrahim Babangida held sway as military Head of State, also revealed that Onu was among the few Nigerians who stood by him during his trying days.
“My relationship with the author is cordial. When I was placed in protective custody, he was sending people to greet me regularly. That was how the relationship developed. We realised in 2015 that unless we come together, the PDP will succeed in killing nige.we had to make sacrifices,” Buhari remarked.
Also speaking, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal described Dr, Onu as a man of many part pointing out that he had the privilege of being the Speaker of the House of Representatives when all that is captured in the book happened.
Tambuwal said: “Then, I was maintaining a very delicate balance. My emergence as Speaker in 2011 was as a result of the efforts of all parties. Back then, the formation of APC was already in the wing. Onu is a man of many parts. The presence of two former governors from Ebonyi state who are PDP and a serving governor is a testimony of who you are.”
Among those present at the book presentation include former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Sokoto state governor, Magatakarda Wamako, former Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu, former Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, former Ebonyi state governor, Sam Egwu, traditional rulers, legislators and members of the business community.
