Tuesday’s alleged assassination attempt on the Deputy Senate President, DSP, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Abuja has attracted the attention of the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institution, Hon. Linus Okorie.

In his swift reaction to the “cowardly attempt” by the suspected assassins, Okorie reminded President Mohmmadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of the their avowed duty to protect all citizens despite political affiliations or less privileged positions.

In a statement, through his Media Aide, Dennis Agbo, Okorie upbraided the APC and President Buhari for negligence in allowing uncommon assassination attempts in the Federal Capital Territory, an act he noted was not rampant across the country and did not take place in Abuja during the years of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, administration of the country.

Okorie warned those he referred to as “detractors” that nothing untoward must happen to the Deputy Senate President, emphasizing that politics and political disagreements should be an intellectual contest and not a ballistic war.

He stressed the task of APC as a ruling party and President Buhari in providing a secure polity for the conduct of legitimate enterprises of all Nigerians, maintaining that for the period of the PDP administration, especially in the past 8 years, political assassination was uncommon across the country and totally unheard of in Abuja.

Okorie said: “President Buhari must personally ensure the security of the Deputy Senate President, other leaders of the legislature and indeed all legislators and particularly opposition politicians. Anything otherwise would rubbish the change mantra on security and bring the country to her kneels.”

He assured Senator Ekweremadu of the support and solidarity of all men of goodwill and encouraged him to remain steadfast in the course of defending democracy.

“I urge the Deputy Senate President not be intimidated by the designs of political desperadoes and their anarchist purveyors masquerading as street assassins,” said Okorie who represents Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State.
