Daar Communications Plc on Wednesday reacted to reports credited to Presidential Spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu on how AIT and NTA maltreated the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the campaigns for the 2015 general elections, describing the allegations as lies.
Details below…

RE:ย HOW NTA, AIT MALTREATED US DURING THE 2015 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS

Our attention has been drawn to the statementย credited toย Mallam Garba Shehu at the Red Summit Media Eventย thatย was held on Thursday Oct 15, 2015, claiming that there was maltreatmentย of the Presidential Campaigns of the All Progressivesย Congress Party (APC)ย by both NTA and our Television Stationย – Africa Independent Television (AIT)ย during the 2015ย Presidentialย Campaigns.

Much as we had resolved to maintain a dignified silence on this ย matter, in the interest ofย ourย collectiveย civicย duty and responsibility to our dearย Country,ย the broadcast sector that we have played a pioneering role in since our debut into the sector, the ย entrenchment of independent broadcasting and the several cum selfless patriotic roles that we have diligently and repeatedly undertaken for and on behalf of the good people of Nigeria which amongst others is the protection of the democracy that we are all enjoying since the returnย of the countryย to democratic governance,ย we are compelled to address these claims.

That DAAR Communications PLC was at the forefront of the struggle for the enthronement andย protection of Democracy in Nigeria is indeed an incontrovertible fact. That as an Organisation,ย we patriotically deployedย all ourย resources to the struggle which haveย resulted in the loss and destructionย of our stations,ย transmitters,ย equipment and facilities to mysterious fire, physical attacks and the clamping down onsome of our Staff in the course of discharging theirย professionalย duties, are all political/historical facts which haveย been appropriately documented by Scholars and a common knowledge of Nigerians who were witnesses to the aberration perpetuatedย during the military rule in the country.

In all of those trying times we remained resolute and kept our eyes on the goal with the belief that in the end, the success of democratic ruleย would be worth the challenges we faced.ย Thankfully,ย Nigeria is now a democratic nation havingย succeeded in the democratic handover of powerย from the Military,ย through several civilian to civilian governments and from aย ruling party to an opposition party, the first time in our history.

It is however, not yet Uhuru. Democracy includes the rightย of theย citizens to fairly air their views on any issues as long as they are within theย confines of theย laws of the land and provides for equal opportunity for all views irrespective of religious,ย ethnicย or politicalย differencesย and as an Organisation which values the tenets of democracy, we strive, always, to protect the rights of ALL citizens at all times.

As aย broadcast Organisation, we have much more at stake than any politicianย andย administrationย whose tenure, by our laws,ย is time/term based while our role, duty and responsibility is by the grace of God; timeless!

With the foregoing, it is pertinent to respond to Mallam Garba Shehuโ€™sclaims.

On theย allegationย of maltreatment through the rejection and denial of political campaign space on our Station, we wish to state categorically andย emphaticallyย that at no time did we rejectย or deny the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressivesย Congressย (APC)ย broadcast space on our Station โ€“ Africa Independent Television (AIT).ย Itย has always been our policy to open up the democratic space to allย the broad spectrum of actors in theย politicalย horizon.

For the benefit of discerning members of the public and political academics who will obviously document some facts for historical purposes and the stock of public information compendium, we hereby challenge Mallam Garba Shehu to:

1.ย State the names of the Officer(s)/Department(s)ย that he dealt with whereinย theย materials that he wanted aired wereย outrightlyย rejected.
2.ย The Officer(s) that returned the moniesย for the commercials that he claimed were rejected.

Forย the benefits of the Institution of the State; the Presidency, National Assembly, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Broadcast Stakeholders,ย Historyย and Political Scholars andย indeedย the general public,ย we are compelled to state theย under listedย facts herein:

1.ย As a broadcast Organisation we are guided by the provisions of theย Nigerianย Broadcast Code and our entire operational modusย operandiย is based on the provisions of the code.

2.ย We subscribe to the laws of the land asย enshrinedย in theย 1999ย Constitution of the Federalย Republic of Nigeria as amended, and otherย Acts of the National Assembly.

3.ย We are guided by the tenets of mediaย practiceย whichย areprofessionalism, fairness, objectivity and balanceย irrespectiveย of political affiliation.

4.ย At the beginning of the electioneering process meant to herald the 2015 Elections and as has been our practice since 1999,

a.ย We opened our Stationsย to all the contesting political parties and theirย respectiveย candidates onย all ourย broadcastย platforms;ย RayPower FM, Faaji FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

b.ย We gave all the Candidatesย the opportunity to espouse their political programmes on dedicated programmes on all our platforms free of charge.

5.ย Inย theย course of appraisingย theย media bookingsย by all the political players, we realized that between the two major political parties, the All Progressivesย Congress (APC)โ€™sย media bookingsย were rather low. Without prompting, we constitutedย a marketing committeeย deliberatelyย for the All Progressivesย Congressย (APC) headed byย ourย ownย Hajia Nafisat Aliu.

In accordance with the ethics of our business;ย media bookings, the terms of the contract, the discount offered amongstย others are usually contractual obligations whichย are sacrosanctย and exclusive only to the parties involved but if and when the need arises, we are willing and ready to tender all the contract documents to the public for their information and knowledge. We feelย pained,ย disappointed and betrayed by the allegation of maltreatment of All ProgressivesCongress (APC) Presidential Campaigns by Mallam Garba Shehu who at various timesย requested for unusual discounts andย concessions, at short notices,ย which weย oftenย obligedย in our spirited efforts of ensuring that we engaged all political parties;ย mostย especially the All Progressivesย Congress (APC) in our broadcasts so thatย we would beย to all parties.

Inย conclusion, we wish to state thatย theย Elections have been won and lost and asย an Organisation we are focused on continuing to build and develop our great nation. Weย haveย extendingย ourย patriotic handsย of fellowship to allย the political actorsย and indeedย everyone toย pull together for the sake of our dearly beloved Nationย –ย Nigeria.ย This, is the globalย bestย practice, after Elections and the attendant politics, national interest takes the centreย –ย stage.

For the benefit of Mallam Garba Shehu, hisย Principalย in theย ย All Progressives Congressย (APC)ย is now our dear President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. This is the time to join hands with all well meaning Nigerians to partner with the new administration, remember them in our individual and collective prayers,ย and supportย the administrationย to succeed.ย The task ahead of this Government is enormous and it therefore cannot afford any form of distraction.

The success of this administration and indeed any administration, as government is a continuum, is the success of all Nigerians. The future of our children dependsย on the success of this and all administrations which are saddled to lead Nigeria.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Signed
