The Osun Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Adekomi Jacob, says workers in the state will begin an indefinite strike on Tuesday (May 26) because of non-payment of salaries and entitlements to workers.
The chairman spoke a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, where he disclosed that six months salaries had not been paid to workers.
Jacob said that the state government’s refusal to pay salaries of workers and arrears of retirees’ pension, among others, prompted its members to resolve to embark on an indefinite strike.
“The strike will commence from May 26 until when the demands of the unions and workers are met.
“All workers in the state are advised to stay at home until further directive by the Labour,” Jacob said.
Jacob said workers in Osun were being owned six months salaries and the situation had placed untold hardship on workers and their dependants.
He said that the state government had not been serious about the matter.
“Despite the 14 days ultimatum given by the union to allow the state government to take drastic action to the effect, no payment was effected,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 17 unions were present at the NUJ secretariat in Osogbo to support the move by the NLC for the strike.
