Policemen posted to ensure security at the Abia state office of the Independent Electoral; Commission’s office, Umuahia yesterday threw caution to the wind as they scrambled for the cash gift given to them by Mr. Chinedum Orji, son of the Abia state governor, Chief Theodore Orji.
The younger Orji who was on his way out of the INEC office after receiving his certificate of return dipped his hands into his pocket and brought out an undisclosed amount of money which he gave to the policemen who has already clustered around his black BMW jeep.
The policemen who were elated at the generousity of the governor’s son nearly wrestled down one of their colleagues who received the gift in a bid to get their share. Some of them chased the holder of the cash gift around the security post of the electoral agency, shouting on top of their voices.
The situation caused traffic jam as the policemen blocked the exit gate while chasing their colleague around while others were celebrating the ‘windfall’, making it impossible for vehicles top leave the premises.
Visitors, journalists and staff of INEC who observed the drama were seen laughing over the way the policemen scrambled over the cash gift.
