Information available to 247ureports.com indicates that the governor of Anambra State, Mr. Willie Obiano maybe under intense pressure to abandon the All Progressive Grand Alliance [APGA] for the All Progressive Congress [APC]. The pressure became evident with the recent visit by Governor Obiano to President-Elect Buhari – where the governor of Anambra pledged unfettered support for the incoming APC led government under President-Elect Buhari in Abuja.
The visit which caught many political observers by surprise opened the floodgates to the rumor mill and speculations of a possible defection on the offing. Some informed spectators within the corridors of power in Abuja who believe the visit by Obiano to be a precursor to his eventual decampment from the APGA to the APC indicate that the APC incoming administration had been mounting mouth-watering pressure on the governor’s of the south east and those of the south south geo-political regions to defect from there various parties into the APC. Of particular interest is the governor of Anambra State who the APC stalwarts have promised a rosy welcome into the party should the governor agree and decamp.
According to independent information available to our correspondent, the Anambra State governor was not quick to discard the offer – rather he was welcoming of the gesture as symbolic of friendship and/or opportunity for partnership. A source within the Obiano administration revealed that Obiano had been interested in partnering with other powerful government entities to enable fend off the overbearing intimidation and threats from the former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi and his political partners at the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]. Gov. Obiano, according to the source, finds himself constantly functioning under the threat of impeachment and other similar impediments being orchestrated by the PDP chieftains of Anambra State.
To this effect, the governor of Anambra State found it necessary to align his administration with a supposedly stronger and/or superior force in Abuja. The Obiano’s administration has remained stoic on their determination to remain in the APGA until the end of Obiano’s tenure in office. As the media aide to the governor [James Eze] put it to 247ureports.com, he was clear and certain that the pressure being mounted on the governor would not break the governor. He also noted that the talk of Obiano’s entry into the APC as mere rumor. “He [Obiano] addressed the press right in front of Buhari in Abuja where he said clearly that he had no intention of defecting to APC. He said that on national television. Anyone who wants to do responsible journalism can figure that out. He said he would continue to lead APGA but that he would support Buhari’s administration of 100%. Anyone who is adding anything else to his clearly stated position is fishing for mischief and Obiano is too focused on his mission to turn Anambra State around to allow himself to be distracted by mischief makers. Thank you”.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Chief Tony Onyima also spoke with 247ureports.com denying the growing rumor that the governor may have thrown in the towel. “It’s totally untrue. We have repeatedly issued statement to that effect. Just two days ago His Excellency used the opportunity of his visit to the President-elect to again debunk such rumour. Thanks“.
But the PDP chieftains from Anambra based in Abuja insist that the Governor has begun moves to dump the APGA for the APC. One of the chieftain who was a commissioner during Peter Obi’s administration stated that he will be surprised to see Gov Obiano still in the APGA by the end of the year. “He has no choice because APGA is dead“. To this, one of the media aides to the governor discarded the PDP chieftains allegations as hot air. Hear him, “It remains but a rumor. How fast the rumor mill shifts like quick sand. Recall that just before the elections, rumor had it that he is joining PDP. Just because Buhari won, it is now APC. Haba!”
Governor Obiano is due to join the gubernatorial contest in November 2016.
