The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has continued to show the human side of governance as he set aside the serious issues of the state to pay a surprise visit to victims of a fatal accident that claimed one life and left four others wounded in Onitsha.
The governor who arrived Ward 3 of Onitsha General Hospital on Monday afternoon to offer words of encouragement to the recuperating casualties of the accident showed dissatisfaction with vehicle owners whose lack of attention to the need to maintain their vehicles have often led to avoidable accidents on the highways.
Cheering up the two accident victims who were among the five casualties of the crash involving a trailer that had a brake failure and crushed a tricycle and other vehicles along Awka Road, Onitsha last week, Governor Obiano declared the determination of his administration to weed out all vehicles that are not road worthy from plying the roads in Anambra State in order to forestall avoidable crashes.
Thanking God for saving the lives of the survivors of the crash, Governor Obiano assured them that his administration would offset their medical bills.
Meanwhile, Governor Willie Obiano has enjoined members of the NYSC serving the country to use of the opportunity offered by the scheme to contribute their quota to nation building.
Addressing some corps members who had gathered to cheer up their colleague, Miss Eucharia Jerebodom who is recovering in the hospital, the Governor urged corps members to use the skills and knowledge they had acquired in school to make a difference in their places of primary assignment.
“In 1979, I was a corps member like you in Benue State. I applied myself so well in the service that I was named the Best Corps Member in the state during my time. So, I encourage you to aspire to be the best. This is not a time for jamboree. This is a time for you to practice what you have learnt at different levels of your education. I want you to win an award like me and become the best corps member in Anambra State and I look forward to presenting that award to one of you here. That is what I want every one of you to aspire to attain during your service experience in Anambra State,” the governor admonished.
He therefore assured the corps member of the support of his administration saying “I am going to take of the coprs memebrs here very well because I enjoyed my service experience. It is still one of the memorable periods of my life today.”
Responding, a corps member, Miss Nkemjika Nwokorie assured the governor that the corps members would continue to give their best to give meaning to the objectives of the scheme.
