Kano Pillars on Saturday defeated South Sudanese side Al-Malakia FC 2-0 in a preliminary round tie of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that goals from Gambo Mohammed and Christian Obiozor ensured that Kano Pillars claimed a 2-0 away victory in the first leg tie.
Glo Premier League champions Kano Pillars went into the first leg match on the back of two impressive riendly matches against Hearts of Oak and Ghana’s under-23 team.
A small but vocal crowd rooted for the hosts, but the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions held their own to win the game.
The first half saw Pillars dominating possession, but they lacked the cutting edge to score.
In the second half, Okey Emordi’s team bombarded the minnows and got two well-taken goals.
Gambo Mohammed opened the scoring in the 46th minute to hand Pillars a needed advantage.
They then made it 2-0 through Christian Obiozor midway through the second half to boost their hopes of progressing to the next round.
Pillars will host the South Sudanese side in the return leg at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Feb. 28.
