ENUGU, NIGERIA; January 16, 2015: The Chekwas Okorie for President Campaign Organization (COPCO) is proud to announce that Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji has been appointed its Director General for the upcoming general elections in Nigeria. A veteran of presidential, gubernatorial and local election campaigns for the Democratic Party in the United States of America, Dr. Ugorji brings to the Chekwas Okorie campaign a wealth of experience in seeking liberty for and service to the underserved, through political organizing and gumption in progressive political action.
Among Dr. Ugorji’s experience is his membership and volunteer participation in Obama for America (OFA), the presidential campaign organization for then Senator Barack Obama in 2008, which later metamorphosed into Organizing for Action (OFA) after Obama was elected president. He had also worked in voluntary capacities for the Bill Clinton campaigns for president, as well as for the Jesse Jackson for president campaigns.
Considered an authority on the Nigerian Diaspora, Dr. Ugorji who resides both in the US and in Nigeria has consulted with various governments of Nigeria on the involvement of the Nigerian Diaspora for national development. As a scholar-activist, he believes that knowledge is most useful when deployed in action, even when the odds appear prohibitive.
“I consider Chekwas Okorie to be one of the most consistently principled politicians in Nigeria, whose bid for the presidency is as prophetic as it is liberating,” Dr. Ugorji says. With over 25 years of experience in public administration, the new DG of COPCO is also a publisher and writer. He says that the UPP presidential candidate has earned his respect and trust.
On his part, Chief Dr. Chekwas Okorie says he is humbled by the sacrifice Dr. Ugorji has accepted to make in the cause of his run for president. “I am excited that Dr. Ugorji has joined my campaign;” Chief Okorie says, “and I see his arrival as a testament to the fact that our cause is just, and that our party’s quest for service in the highest office of our beloved nation is rooted in a victorious, Africa-centered consciousness.”
