The Special Local Government Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to elect National Delegates for the presidential primary election was successfully held in Enugu State today with the emergence of 17 Ad-Hoc Delegates from the 17 Local Government Area (LGAs) of the State.
The Acting State Chairman of the party, Elder David Aja and the four-man Local Government Congress Committee from the PDP national headquarters, Abuja, supervised the Local Government Congress.
Members of the Committee include Barr. Gabe Igboko, who is the Chairman, Alh. Kabiru Bala Maitama, Hon. Lawal Mammadu, Chief Olumide Olusuyi , and Rose Confidence Alozie.
Field reports from the 17 LGAs indicated that the exercise was peaceful as the three-man delegates elected during the November 1, 2014 Ward Congresses in the 260 Electoral Wards in the State participated fully at the designated centres and elected one delegate from each of the 17 LGAs in line with the party’s guideline.
Although the Panel Chairman did not release the results, reports from the 17 LGAs indicated that those elected as National Delegates from Enugu State during Saturday’s congress were: Enugu North LGA- Hon. Chuka Ayogu, Enugu East – Hon. Edward Nnaji; Isiuzo- Prof. Samuel Ugwu, Nkanu East- Hon. Anayo Ede, Nkanu West- Dr. Chika Okenwa Ani, and Enugu South- Hon. Emma Okenwa, Nsukka – Hon. Charles Ugwu, Udenu- Barr. Charles Ugwu, and Igbo-Etiti- Barr. Simeon Ngwu.
Others elected were: Igboeze North- Amb. Fidel Ayaogu, Uzo Uwani – Prof. Mathias Ofili Ugwudoha, Igboeze South – Prof. Osita Ogbu, Aninri – Barr. Eric Ogudu, Awgu – Barr. Eze O. Eze, Ezeagu – Hon. Okey Ozoani, Oji River – Engr. Bethel Onyenyiri, and Udi – Dr. Simon Eneh
There were no skirmishes at any of the centres as the delegates and party officials conducted the exercise in a very peaceful manner.
Party chieftains, stalwarts and supporters who were present at most of the centres, hailed the officials for the smooth conduct of the exercise, which they described as a demonstration if the unity and peace that exist among members of the party in the State.
Speaking at the end of congresses, the Acting Chairman of the State chapter of the PDP, Elder David Aja commended party faithful and delegates for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the exercise, noting that the State was now ready for the forthcoming party primaries at both the State and national levels.
He said: “Enugu State chapter of the PDP is on course to retaining power in the State and produce credible representatives at the National Assembly come 2015. And as you know, we are determined to contribute to the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan by ensuring that he is reelected both at the National Convention/Presidential Primary and the 2015 general election in line with the position of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP”.
Also speaking, Chairman of the PDP five-man Local Government Congress Committee, Barr. Gabe Igboko, has commended the people of Enugu State for their cooperation towards the successful conduct of the exercise.
The Committee, which earlier met with the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu, congratulated the Enugu State PDP for the successful congress.
Igboko said: “Our impression about today’s congress is that it was rancour-free, fair, and credible. We are very happy with the way the delegates conducted themselves, which made our assignment very easy. We will transmit the result of the congress to the national secretariat of the party. But as expected, credible people were elected by the delegates”.
